There’s a fine line between ‘dream home addition’ and ‘Why did I even start this?’ I’ve seen both sides.
Case in point: my cousin George completely botched his home office, losing him money (and even a bit of sanity). Meanwhile, I added my own space last year, and it looks like a Zoom background.
The difference is that I hired a top-rated contractor. He went the cheaper route.
So, if you want a home upgrade that actually adds value and doesn’t leave you ranting on Reddit, consider following my path. I’ve rounded up some pros that are worth ringing.
How We Chose the Best Contractors for Home Additions in Toronto
- Experience: Only companies with at least 10 years of hands-on experience cracked a spot. To verify, we scoured through online registration records and portfolios. Naturally, companies with more (or varied projects) on their resume got better scores.
- Credentials: This list is exclusive to contractors with paperwork like a Certificate of Qualification or an HCRA licence. Online directories were checked to confirm validity. Extra points were handed to contractors who received awards.
- Customer Service: Promptness, professionalism, clarity, and enthusiasm mattered. We enquired through email, phone, and visits (when available) to come up with a score. Feedback and interviews also contributed to the final grade.
- Transparency: Through personal experience and interviews, we picked contractors who typically provide clear estimates, contracts, timelines, delays, and risks.
- Pricing: Factoring materials, labour, and overall quality, we narrowed the list to contractors who offer the best value. Having averages close to Toronto’s standard rates influenced our decision as well.

I wouldn’t have pulled off my project without Toronto General Contractors (TGC). Anan, the consultant I worked with, simplified technicalities (like code compliance) while also turning my ideas into realistic, actionable plans.
There was no subcontracting either. An in-house team of designers and tradespeople did all the work, so I didn’t have to call someone else just to check the project’s 3D-rendered design.
Even better was the fixed pricing system, as it didn’t go beyond Toronto’s averages. The bonus was that they matched the low prices I found online.
Some noteworthy accolades also boost TGC’s appeal, mainly the BBB/NKBA accreditations and their ‘Small Business of the Year’ win in 2012.
A teeny flaw is the Oakville location. If you prefer office meetings over calling or waiting for a consultant to come by, be prepared for approximately an hour (or more) of travel from the city centre.
Their high demand also means you can’t get a slot easily.
Pros
- Straightforward approach
- No outsourcing
- Punctual and honest consultants
- Reasonable, fixed prices
- Accredited and award-winning
Cons
- Not in the city centre (1-plus hour of travel from Downtown Toronto)
- High demand
Seamless and Straightforward
Anan and Moh were true professionals throughout the entire process. They made designing and building our home extension feel seamless and straightforward. The quality of their work is outstanding, and the project was completed right on schedule. I highly recommend them! Will be using them moving forward!

He always went the extra mile to make sure we had our dream basement all of our preferences were noted and implemented. Crown is among the most reliable in terms of timeline. In fact, the clients we hit up mentioned the company finishing the job right on schedule.
The staff got some props as well, thanks in large part to their proactivity. Most times, you don’t have to wait for an hour to get a response through chat.
Like the first entry, there are no outsourcing concerns either. The contractors, engineers, and architects generally operate under one roof, streamlining communication.
That said, there’s a Sunday closure. Most of their competitors operate every day.
Not having awards can be a deal-breaker to a few detail-obsessed folks as well.
If experience matters more for you, Crown’s 15-plus years in the industry might offset that.
They also have some niche offerings beyond home additions, chiefly condo renovations.
Pros
- 15+ years of experience
- Proactive team
- Reasonable prices
- In-house team
- Niche offering (condo renovation)
Cons
- Closes on Sundays
- No major awards
Lovely and Useful
Before advertising our house, we needed to do a complete remodel, which included major kitchen renovations, painting, and flooring. Crown kept under our budget and finished everything in less than a month. Our home is now both lovely and useful.

High-End Look
The tilework is clean and precise, the cabinetry fits perfectly, and every room has a polished, high-end look. They have an eye for design. We had some awkward corners and structural quirks in our old home, but they always knew how to handle that. It was a whole home reinvention, and Crown Construction nailed it!

Running since 2005, ALBO is a safe bet for property owners who prioritise experience.
From what we’ve heard, they’re quite well-versed in sorting tricky bits, including permits and multi-story properties. If we’re talking specialty, though, renovating or adding new rooms to old homes is their bread and butter.
If there’s an area that could use some work, it’s the customer service. A few clients have mentioned run-ins with rude personnel.
On a more positive note, accolades aren’t rare with this team. The notable ones include the Service Award and Top Choice Award (2016 to 2023).
Prices are also clearly discussed through face-to-face consults. What’s nicer is that they often provide discounts, thanks to having partnerships with local suppliers.
Scheduling weeks (or even months) in advance is highly recommended, though. ALBO has plenty of ongoing projects, which means booking requires some lead times.
Pros
- Operating since 2005
- Offers discounts
- Has awards
- Specializes in old homes (both for renovations and additions)
- Face-to-face consults
Cons
- History of rude reps
- Booking may require lead time
Totally Worth It
We tore everything down and rebuilt from scratch—main floor, second floor, and basement. Opened up the main floor, and it made a huge difference. The house feels way bigger and more practical now. It was a lot of work, but totally worth it.

Entire Home Flows Better
We rebuilt almost every room — nothing was left untouched. The kitchen is now open and connected, the living room feels cozy but spacious, and the entire home flows better overall.

Astaneh’s positive reputation makes them a top contender for many. With industry affiliations (such as Renomark and NKBA) and accolades like the Top Choice Award (2024), it’s hard to deny their calibre.
The staff play a big role in that. They’re often described as patient and responsive, with Hamed getting most of the praise.
Turnaround-wise, we didn’t see any red flags. Estimates have been accurate so far, and they’re quite realistic with timelines, which is great for preventing budget overruns.
Astaneh’s team also connects well with detail-driven individuals. You see, our interviewees praised the firm’s consultants for proactively explaining every aspect of the project (e.g., material quality, structural integrity, and permits).
However, their portfolio, despite being extensive, skews more toward renovations than additions. That might be an issue for those who prefer companies with more experience in the latter.
Another minor hiccup is the Sunday unavailability.
Pros
- Operating for 10+ years
- Reliable turnaround
- Has industry affiliations and awards
- Reasonable prices
- Easy-to-reach staff
Cons
- Portfolio has more renovation than addition projects
- Sunday closure
Professional Team
We just done our full renovation with Astaneh construction. I do really happy work with them and Hamed’s professional team.
They have been taking care of every corner of the drawing in the construction process and easy to reach out and communicate to make changes or upgrades
Thank you so much for your and your team efforts, 🙏

Nothing but professionals
We had the privilege to work with Hamed on a few different projects in the past. Hamed and his crew have been nothing but professionals, from answering all the questions and coming up with solutions to our problems in the most efficient and timely manner possible.
I highly recommend these guys for anyone with any type of construction needs, commercial or residential.

With over twenty years of experience, JP Construction is one of Toronto’s most longstanding names. And yes, the company’s portfolio is also one of the chunkiest around, giving you plenty to reference.
In addition, reaching out to them is often described as straightforward, especially if you get Wendy or James. The two are said to patiently answer questions and are transparent when it comes to timelines and costs.
Speaking of costs, their rates are just right for Toronto. Unlike most of their competitors, though, their pricing system isn’t fixed, and you must call first for estimates, since general breakdowns aren’t available.
The bigger issue is that they’ve had a few cases of swapping teams mid-project, which can really slow things down or cause miscommunication gaps.
Fortunately, this doesn’t seem to affect the quality. Awards like ‘Best of Trusted Pros’ (2021 to 2024) and ‘Best of Toronto Award’ (2023) are solid proof of that.
Pros
- Open since 2000
- Reasonable prices
- Easy to contact
- Massive portfolio
- Multi-awarded
Cons
- Pricing isn’t fixed
- History of changing teams mid-project
Content with How the Job Came Out
I had hired JP lucky last month to do my front yard interlocking, Felix and James had thoroughly walked me through the whole process and made sure to help me keep costs down as well.
I am extremely content with how the job came out and how much they were able to transform my property.
I will be using JP Lucky for my other property and I’ll surely send a recommendation to anyone looking to get their interlocking/roofing done.
